Dirt & Gravel Roads Program
The Lawrence Conservation District has a delegation agreement with the State Conservation Commission to administer the Dirt and Gravel
Road Program. The mission of the program is to train and provide financial assistance to municipalities in the environmentally sensitive
maintenance of dirt and gravel roads.
Dirt and gravel roads can be contributors of pollution to our waterways. Unstable surfaces
and drainage features contribute and act as conduits for the transportation of sediment and stormwater runoff. The program is a proponent
for the use of improved road materials and better maintenance.
Lawrence County has approximately 30 miles of unpaved roads. Worksites
are tracked, monitored and reported on the Conservation District’s Geographic Information System. The Conservation District is required
to appoint a Quality Assurance Board (QAB) made of up District Board members and cooperating agency staff to oversee the program.
The District invites you to take a few minutes and check out some of the projects completed in the last few years.
