News & Updates
At the 2012 Lawrence County Fair, the conservation district sported a "Backyard Conservation" display educating citizens on simple ways to help conserve our natural resources right in your own backyard. Displayed was a rain barrel and rain chain* along with information on composting, mulching, and planting native trees and plants.
As part of the display, we asked you, the citizens of Lawrence County, what are your  personal "conservation habits?" Throughout the week, conservation habits were written down by fair attendees, and then entered into a drawling to win the plants featured in our display. At the end of fair week, we drew a conservation practice belonging to Ms. Joyce Beikert. Congratulations Joyce! Joyce's personal conservation habits include planting for butterflies and birds. Some of the other conservation practices of your fellow Lawrence County Citizen's include:

“Recycle, Compost, Reuse”

“Soil conservation by retention walls, rainwater reclamation”

“Compost, rainwater barrels”

“Recycle, plant trees”

“Recycle as much as possible”

“Planting trees ordered thru “Arbor Day” fundraisers, creating wildlife habitats”

“Recycle burnables, reuse”

“Use rainwater for filling swimming pool, shut lights off when leaving room, birdbath for birds filled with rainwater, use fruit seeds to plant”

“Composting native plants, BMPs, etc.”

“Reuse white water when possible”

“Feed birds”

*The rain barrel and rain chain on display were purchased by the conservation district through a grant funded by the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania Citizen Education Fund through a Section 319 federal Clean Water Act grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, administered by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Thank you to all of those that stopped by the Lawrence County Conservation District Dislay and shared their conservation habits with the rest of us.

If you were unable to attend the fair but would like information on "Backyard Conservation Habits," please feel to contact the district.
